Depression can make life feel heavy, exhausting, and hard to navigate—even when everything looks “fine” on the outside. You may feel disconnected from yourself, overwhelmed by daily responsibilities, or like you’re simply going through the motions. If you’ve been struggling with sadness, low energy, or a loss of motivation, you don’t have to face it alone. Common Types of Depression

Depression can look and feel different from person to person, and it doesn’t always show up the same way. There are several types of depression, each with its own set of symptoms, triggers, and patterns—from persistent low mood to episodes tied to life changes or seasons. Understanding these differences can help people recognize what they’re experiencing and find the most effective support.

Major Depressive Disorder

Major Depressive Disorder is a common and serious form of depression that affects how a person feels, thinks, and functions day to day. It often involves persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities, low energy, and difficulty concentrating that lasts for two weeks or longer. People with MDD may also experience changes in sleep or appetite, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, or a sense of hopelessness about the future. Counseling can help individuals with MDD understand their symptoms, develop coping strategies, and gradually rebuild motivation, stability, and hope.

Bipolar Depression

Bipolar depression refers to the depressive episodes that occur as part of Bipolar Disorder. During these periods, individuals may experience deep sadness, low energy, loss of interest, difficulty concentrating, and feelings of hopelessness similar to major depression. These episodes are different from typical depression because they occur alongside periods of elevated mood, increased energy, or impulsivity (mania or hypomania). Counseling can help individuals understand their mood patterns, manage symptoms, and develop strategies to maintain stability and emotional balance.

Postpartum Depression

Postpartum depression is a mood disorder that can occur during pregnancy or after childbirth and goes beyond the typical “baby blues.” It may include persistent sadness, anxiety, exhaustion, irritability, feelings of guilt or inadequacy, and difficulty bonding with your baby. Counseling can provide a safe, supportive space to process emotions, reduce feelings of overwhelm, and help you feel more confident and supported during this transition.

Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia)

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder is a severe form of premenstrual mood symptoms that can significantly impact emotional well-being and daily functioning. Symptoms may include intense sadness, irritability, mood swings, anxiety, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating in the days or weeks leading up to a menstrual cycle. Counseling can help individuals better manage emotional symptoms, develop coping strategies, and feel more supported throughout their cycle.
